Review: Eufy S220 Solo Cam

Eufy S220 Solo Cam
As you could see in our unboxing video, the Eufy name sounded familiar, but I wasn't sure what to expect from its products. What was the quality like? Was the price justified, and how much did the S220 solo cam cost? Those were just some of the questions I had straight away. First, a little background. Eufy is part of Anker, which also owns Soundcore, whose wireless speaker we recently tested. Anker is a major player in the market with several brands. Want to know more? Take a look here.
The Eufy S220 Solo cam comes in a compact box, and its solar-powered design immediately caught my attention. I really didn't fancy drilling holes and installing a power outlet at the front of my house. For me, this seemed like the ideal solution. But… how reliable would it be? Would it charge enough, and what about the approaching winter months with their limited sunlight? Well… those are the questions I want to answer in this review.

Installation
Once I'd unpacked the camera, I plugged it in to charge, as recommended. One small gripe: the included cable is really short. A 1.5-metre cable would have been welcome :). Anyway, after charging, you switch on the camera, launch the app and pair your Solo Cam with it. This was genuinely quick and easy—a big plus! Naturally, the app lets you watch the live feed and play back recordings (events). There are also plenty of settings to tailor things to your preferences. These include the sensitivity that determines when the camera records, image quality and a sort of heatmap for defining detection areas. Overall, I was very happy with it. The app could be a little more innovative in places, but that doesn't spoil the experience.
The Eufy Solo Cam S220 scores very highly for installation, with an easy-to-follow setup process. Mounting it is straightforward too, and all the included accessories make it a complete package!
Testing
My plan was always to mount the camera outdoors to get the most realistic picture of its performance. I installed it in September and left it running for a month. With the days getting shorter and darker, I particularly wanted to see how that would affect charging and battery use. Below is an image to give you an idea of the camera's image quality:

Battery
As mentioned, the days are now shorter and greyer again. I was very curious to see what that would mean for the battery. It has now been running for over a month, and I've just checked: the battery is at 91%. That's incredibly good, especially when you consider that it's completely wire-free! If the battery does run low, you can easily take the camera down, charge it and put it back. I expect the battery level will drop somewhat over the coming months, but so far, this has been a real positive.
Overall impressions
After roughly a month of testing the camera and exploring the app, I can only say that if you're looking for a security camera, this model is hard to pass up at around EUR 150 (2024). Once again, the convenience of a truly wire-free camera, complete with 2K recording and free storage, makes this a good deal in my book!
Conclusion:
You can probably see this coming, as I've already given most of it away :). The Eufy solo cam S220 costs around EUR 150, which makes it a genuine bargain, at least in my opinion. Why? I've used other cameras, including models from well-known Chinese online shops. Sometimes you get lucky; other times, you end up with a camera whose quality leaves a lot to be desired. I genuinely believe that if you want quality and dependable security, the Eufy Solo Cam S220 will deliver. Be sure to check out the rest of their product range too, as there are plenty of other options, including local storage and linking multiple cameras together.
Verdict
